Half-Day Glacier Hike
Strap on crampons and explore the otherworldly surface of the Root Glacier on this icy trek! Peer into glacial ponds or deep blue holes (moulins), take in vast and open landscape, or follow the creeks on the surface of the glacier into their turquoise slot canyons. The tour starts with an interpretive walk through historic Kennicott and then onto a two-mile trail to the glacier, following the path of the receding ice.
Aside from the human history of the area, learn about ecology, wildlife, plant succession and wildflowers as you travel over glacier moraines before arriving at the ice. Once you arrive at the glacier, your guide will help you put your crampons on and explain how to navigate the glacial landscape.
If the sun is out, you’ll get great views of Mt. Blackburn and the Kennicott Glacier, as well as explore the dynamic and inspiring glacial environment before heading back to Kennicott! Even if the sky is grey or rainy the power of the glacier is still beautiful and amazing.
