Trip Descriptions

Basecamping:
One of those places that makes you feel like no person has ever set foot there before. A special location even among the variety of Wrangell St. Elias. An impressive flight, deep into the Chugach, brings you to the base of mountains, confluence of glaciers and birthplace of rivers. Excellent camping near the airstrip is centrally located allowing you to head in each of the cardinal directions for day hikes that are varied and rewarding. Check out hanging glaciers, emerald kettle pools and fields of wildflowers.

  • Duration: 3-4 days
  • Difficulty: Easy-Hard Fan Glacier

Backpacking Loops:
There are a few options for backpacking loops into the alpine on both sides of the valley. Steady gains and bushy terrain down low give way to alpine wonderlands above. Camp near crystal blue alpine ponds and scamper up ridges after dinner. Views of otherworldly glaciers and peaks of Bagley Icefield to the south add to the sense of being deep in untouched terrain. Add to the adventure by completing a loop via valley glacier traverse. These routes are challenging, with rocky and bushy sections, but also have amazing campsites and feel truly wild.

  • Duration: 4-6 days
  • Difficulty: Medium-Hard Fan Glacier

Trip Options:
Want to bring a packraft? Bringing packable boats adds another dimension to the trip. Not only giving you access to more day hikes options but allowing you to split your days between hiking and paddling.

Highlights:

  • Long bush plane flights gets you away from the crowds
  • Exciting and varied geology

We are so grateful to the company and our guide, they really made this a dream day for me!

When planning our trip to Alaska, the one thing I wanted was to walk on a Glacier! Dear hubby contacted Kennicott Wilderness Guides and got it all set up. On 9/9/18 we were picked up by Payton, she was awesome and our guide for the day. After all paperwork signed she got us outfitted with crampons. We had a hike to the Root Glacier and along the way she was able and willing to point out lots of small and interesting details. Once we got to the glacier she made sure we had crampons on correcting and showed us how to walk in them. The the day just got better the glacier it was awesome and with her knowledge we learned so much, she had been there the whole season and hiked so much of the area, she gladly shared that info with us. Payton made sure along the way to make sure we were safe.  Absolutely if you want to walk and experience the beauty of the glacier get in touch with this company.
