After a breathtaking flight past the Mile High Cliffs, you’ll be dropped off near the headwaters of the Nizina River. It’s only a brief hike from there to access the beautiful lake at the end of the Nizina Glacier, filled with an array of icebergs. From this spot you have all sorts of options, from heading around the lake to access the glacier, to exploring the riverbed and getting some more views of the surrounding waterfalls and cliffs.
The Nizina Glacier area has two landing areas; Amphitheater Creek is on the West, and Doubtful Creek on the East. Amphitheater Creek is great for day hikes or a good start for river trips due to its locality to the lake. Doubtful Creek is great for multi day backpacking trips or base camping. Because both areas are at the river level, and not in the high country where the snow can stay all the way into July, this is a great area to visit earlier in the season.
Both areas also have outstanding views of the Nizina Glacier Lake and its impressive array of icebergs. In the Nizina Glacier area you can catch sights of ice calving into the lake and glacially carved bedrock pools that are strikingly otherworldly. The relative ease of hiking surfaces and moderate priced airfare, this is another great option for the family.
If you are interested in adding either kayak style packrafts, or bigger rafts to explore the lake and icebergs, let us know and we can arrange that for an additional fee.
