The Classic Hike Back

Trip Description: The Classic Hike Back Backpacking Trip

This is a trip our guides started doing over a decade ago in their free time.  It has become an area classic for its diversity in terrain with a relatively inexpensive flight.  Feel the draw of visiting places so magical locals give them names like Oz.

Start the traverse at the river strip beside the Lakina and hike toward the Lakina Glacier.  A big and at times, steep ascent past beautiful waterfalls will bring you into the alpine.  This magical zone of alpine lakes has the opportunity for amazing day hikes or alpine lounging.  From here there are various options for the next leg.

Depending on conditions, abilities and time you may descend the Hidden Creek drainage or go over a small alpine glacier pass.  All routes culminate at Hidden Creek Lake, which is either full of icebergs or an “iceberg graveyard” after it drains in an anual glacial outburst flood event called a jökulhlaup.

An engaging hike over a historic miners trail will bring you to big views of the Kennicott Valley and provide good camping at the Fosse.  The next leg brings you from the Fosse across the Kennicott and Root Glaciers to the Root Glacier trail.  From here, we can forego crossing the Kennicott Glacier, and we can get picked up at the Fosse via plane.  The Lakina River to The Fosse is still an awesome trip if you want to avoid crossing the large (and challenging) Kennicott Glacier.  See the pricing to the right for the added cost of a pickup at the Fosse.

If you choose to pass up on the pickup at the Fosse and want to hike all the way back to Kennecott, then the Kennicott Glacier can be a feat in and of itself.  The glacier is a mix bands of rocky medial moraines, and dynamic & challenging white ice requiring the use of crampons.  These bands of rock and ice create that striped “black and white” glacier you often see from areal photos.

Hiking across the rock and ice is challenging, and can feel grinding at times, but the reward of being able to cross such an iconic landscape will leave you feeling strong and empowered.  The trip finishes by hiking back into Kennecott via the Root Glacier trail that all the day hikers use.
