Root Glacier

Trip Description

Explore one of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park’s most spectacular valleys… right from our backyard!  With no flight necessary, this trip can be an affordable way to experience anything from glacier backpacking, alpine camping, or steep alpine ridge scrambles.

We begin and end at the deck of our office in downtown Kennicott. Take 3-7 days to explore the Root and Kennicott glaciers and pristine alpine in the mountains above. Possible destinations include Erie Lake, Bear Bowl Pass, the Donoho Basin, and possibly Goat Hair ridge, among many nameless alpine ridges. Stomping through the Kennicott valley is our favorite way to spend our days off, so let us take you out of the guidebook and design an experience for you.

In order to access the camping areas, you should be prepared to carry a 30 lb – 45 lb  (12 kg – 20 kg) back pack through rocky, unstable, and at times steep ground, and may require the use of crampons.  Most first time backpackers who have hiking experience and are in pretty good shape, and are interested in learning backpacking skills are able to enjoy this trip.  However, if you are interested in a lighter duty, basecamping experience, then the Root Glacier backpacking trip isn’t for you.
