Erie Mine Hike
Getting to this mine is a truly Alaskan adventure! The hike starts in Kennicott and goes along same trial we use to hike on the Root Glacier. 4 miles from Kennicott is where we leave the trail to start our climb. Once we begin up the steep gully, the easiest way up to the buildings perched amongst the cliffs is not-so-straightforward, involving some rock scrambling, route-finding, and tricky traversing. Once at the bunkhouse, we can spend time exploring the dilapidated buildings and taking in the immense views of the Stairway Icefall and wave like glacial ogives on the Root Glacier.
On long summer days, we have time to enjoy the quiet of the early evening as we descend the steep, and sometimes slippery gullies back to the trail. This hike is intended for the strong and experienced hikers looking for a challenging and worthwhile objective.
8 – 10 hours
Terrain Challenges May Include:
Ascend and descend sustained steep sections of variable hiking surfaces. The trail can be slippery in very steep sections with possibility of exposure below. If you have a strong fear of steep terrain and/or heights, this hike may not be for you.
Must be in strong physical shape with previous experience hiking in steep mountainous terrain. If you are afraid of heights, this hike may not be for you.
Because this is a private trip only, we can leave anytime before 10 am. We include a shuttle from McCarthy or the footbridge (if that is where you are staying) to pick you up 30 min prior to your departure time.
This trip leaves from the KWG office, which is located on main street Kennicott, across from the Kennicott Glacier Lodge.
