Bonanza or Jumbo Mines Hikes
If you’re looking for a full day’s hike in the mountains AND a trip back in time, come with us to the mines! At the turn of the 20th century the richest copper lode ever found was discovered here, which gave birth to the towns of Kennecott and McCarthy.
These hikes ascend nearly 4,000 vertical feet above Kennicott up to where the mine buildings are. The views of the Kennicott Valley, Mt. Blackburn, Donaho Peak and Kennicott River get better the higher you go. These basins also feature the dramatic face of the Castle, a craggy rock tower that looms overhead, and the ruins of the bunkhouses where the miners once lived.
You will have all day with your own guide, so we can set a pace up the mountain that works with your fitness abilities. Even if we don’t make it to the top, you won’t be disappointed with the views of the Kennicott Valley from high in the alpine!
7 – 9 hours
– (medium – hard)
Terrain Challenges May Include:
sustained vertical gain and loss in elevation over loose, and at times unstable rocky trail.
