COVID-19 Announcement & Information

As of June 1, 2020

Please be sure to see updated Cancellation Policy below ↓

We have decided that in the interest of protecting the safety of our staff, guests, and community, Kennicott Wilderness Guides will not be opening for the 2020 season, marking the first closed season since our birth in 1995.  This decision has been the hardest we have ever had to make as a company and has not come lightly.

Over the past two and a half months, we have been having many discussions as to how we were going to change our operations to meet the best practices standards to guide wilderness adventures in a COVID world.  We spoke with doctors, Lawyers, industry trade organizations, other guide services, our neighbors, and our hearts.  We poured over guidance from the CDC and the State of Alaska’s mandates on a daily basis and wrote literally dozens of pages of updated protocols and guidelines to keep our guests, staff, and community safe.  Most of all, we waited and hoped that something would change so that we could proceed at some capacity of business as usual.  As the summer fast approaches, we cannot wait any longer.

KWG has a long history of navigating and exploring some of the most rugged terrain on Earth.  We are intimately aware of our relationship with risk vs. reward.  Operating a wilderness guide service in the middle of remote Alaska comes with risks that we have spent years studying and mitigating through practice and training.  The rewards of sharing our home and the magic of this place are worth it the risk.  Operating a guide service during a global pandemic however, with conflicting predictions about the future, and the ever changing state and national mandates, is not worth the reward and goes outside of the comfort zone with our risk.

Instead of pushing through this summer with white-knuckled worry every time we hear a cough or sneeze, we are instead taking the opportunity to put our full energy and dedication into making KWG stronger than ever.  We will be back in 2021 and beyond and look forward to sharing the magic of the Wrangells with you all then.  Until then, keep dreaming your own wild dreams.  These mountains will be waiting to share their stories with you when the time is right.

Thank you for your support and understanding,

Betsy, Jared, Monte & the rest of the KWG crew
