2010 Alaska Mountaineering

Ice climbing techniques
Safely anchored to a rope to get an up-close view of the edge of a glacier "moulin," a hole carved into the ice by water

Never worn crampons? No problem! This course is designed to start with the basics, such as knots, rope management, and crampon techniques, and steadily progress through ice climbing, belaying, anchor building, crevasse rescue, and all the other skills that are necessary to safely explore these awe inspiring places. This course focuses on skills that pertain mostly to ice, as the area of the glacier we are on is well below the snow line in the summer months.

For this course we hike out of our office in Kennicott, making it an especially affordable trip for those that don't want to pay for backcountry airfare. The Root Glacier has all of the terrain necessary to practice and sharpen mountaineering skills, from angled slopes to gaping crevasses, seemingly bottomless moulins, and overhanging walls. The availability of this terrain just a few minutes from our campsite on the ice allows us to cover the most material that we possibly can per day, all with practical, hands-on experience.

Inherent in this course are the general skills associated with living out of a pack in the mountains; proper diet, clothing layering systems, camping on the ice, and countless other tricks that make life in the mountains much better.

By the end of these 3 days you won't believe how much more confident and capable you'll feel!
