2008 Alaska Backpacking

Stats: Total Distance: 12 - 20 miles
The Nizina Glacier is one of the major headwaters of the mighty Copper River, and when you see this area you'll see why it has such a grand reputation! A breathtaking flight from McCarthy takes us past the dramatic Mile High Cliffs, named for their vertical mile of relief, and down to a gravel airstrip by the river.

Hiking options abound, from exploring the river bed and surrounding waterfalls and cliffs, to heading up the rough end-moraine of the glacier.

When you leave this place you'll have an intuitive understanding of how glaciers and rivers carve some of the most awe-inspiring terrain on the planet!!
